What is the correct procedure in cleaning your hands as taught in the Hospitals?

This is what many health professionals are taught first. Please give me the detailed instruction. I know it’s more than just turning on the faucet, using soap (anti-bacterial) and scrubbing, and rinsing.

Let me know.

Thanks!

Wash your hands in warm water and soap for about 1 minute

here we do the 20-second thingy

    5 seconds palm to palm
    5 seconds between fingers
5 seconds palm to top of opposite hand (including the wrists)
5 seconds palm to other hand (including the wrists)

to remember the count; count 1-1.000, 2-1,000 up to 20-1,000.

Make sure you scrub around your nails most thoroughly as that’s where germs can accumulate without you knowing. To make sure you’re scrubbing long enough, sing “happy birthday” to yourself in your head and then rinse, but rise downward from the fingers to your elbows so that you’re not rising the germs from your wrists to your fingertips. Also use a paper towel to turn off the water faucet so that you don’t get additional germs back on your hands.

I work in a hospital. They tell you to wash them for as long as it takes to sing the alphabet song (A B C D..) and to make sure you don’t forget your thumbs.

They’re mostly moving to Purell dispensers, which are placed on walls all over the corridors now. These are apparently much more effective.

I was taught in my college nutrition class that you need to:

    1. rinse your hands first for 20 sec in warm water. This part is often neglicted.
    2. use soap and clean, AND sing “row row row your boat” three times…the key here is creating friction.
    3. and then rinse off.

First, have the paper towel already sticking out so that you dont have to crank when you’re dont washing. Then, turn on the faucet and squeeze some soap on your hands. Make a lather with the soap of get in between your fingers. Sing the song ‘happy birthday’ in your head twice and that should be the duration of the time washing. DONT TURN OFF THE FAUCET RIGHT WHEN YOU’RE DONE! First get the paper towel…dry your hands quickly, then turn off the faucet WITH THE PAPER TOWEL. If you’re air drying your hands it’ll be better. So just turn off the water with the side of your hand. Then, instead of opening the door with your hand, use the paper towel you fried your hands with to open it, and then before the door closes, throw the paper towel in the garbage.

Thsi is the EXACT procedure….so i hope this helps!

Heard this on Oprah makes sense cause I looked on line nothing there amazed me too. Sing happy birthday to yourself while washing hands starting from tips of fingers letting the water run down your hands not over them , singing happy birthday will be enough seconds to make sure they are thoroughly washed with warmest water you can stand not hot.
lather hands with a sanitizing soap I find liquid is more sanitary than a bar

Cleansing your hands and sterilizing your hands for surgery are two completely different procedures. I will give you both. Cleansing your hands of bacteria: warm water, antibacterial soap, scrub for at least 2 minutes even between fingers and under fingernails. Sterile scrub: You need a foot peddle operated sink or someone to turn off & on the sink for you, sterile (autoclaved) scrub brush and towel and Triclosan or a Betadine scrub. Start scrubbing with the nail brush, your fingers first not going over anything twice! down to your elbows, in circular motion for at least 5 minutes keeping your arms elevated so when you rinse, the water does not run down what you just scrubbed and contaminate it. Dry off with the sterile towel, proceed with sterile gloves.
