Newsletter from NOW.org:

“I am alarmed and I need your help to stop the flood of anti-abortion amendments being added to health care reform bills. Some of those amendments would not only prevent improvements in women’s health care — they could take away the abortion coverage that many women already have from their private insurance plans.

I need activism and the most generous gift you can afford to block these attacks on women’s health care. We must move quickly to contact every member of Congress during this late summer recess to make it clear that women’s lives are not for sale. What can you do?

First: your senators and representative are at home and accessible. Call their district offices today and remind them that women’s reproductive health is not a bargaining chip to be traded at the whim of some insurance company or drug manufacturer. If they are holding town meetings, go and speak up for women.

Second: please send your contribution today to help us mobilize NOW’s network of grassroots activists. We need to move quickly, so the health care reform that we’ve all longed for and worked for doesn’t turn out to be a disaster for women’s reproductive rights.

When even people we helped elect to office cannot be counted on to stand up and fight for basic reproductive health care, it’s time to begin holding some feet to the fire.

Congress goes back in session in September, and health care legislation could quickly gel into its final form. While members are at home for their August recess we have an ideal opportunity to make it clear to each of them that women’s lives must be taken off the bargaining table.

Please contact your representatives and let me hear from you today.

If such a thing ever came to pass it would be very sad for all.

Women who can afford it would need to go either to Canada or Mexico to have the procedure done. Abortion is illegal in Ireland and for decades now Irish women have been having abortion procedures done in the UK. A spin-off industry has grown out of this, and the same thing would happen in the USA re: Canada and Mexico. Poor women would be doomed to crank out unwanted babies they weren’t equipped to take care of. .

I didn’t read this all, I’m just referring my answer to the main question.
I think American woman losing their abortion coverage is both sour and sweet. First off, I think that if you are deciding to have unprotected sex, you should face the consequences of raising a child and becoming pregnant, because it is your fault for being irresponsible. You shouldn’t take the life of a child that’s going to be YOUR child, and you have no right to take away it’s chance of life. It’s been created already, why destroy it? Adoption can always be another option if you’re not ready to raise it. I think this is also bitter because some woman may discover that their child is going to be severely mentally ill or will require various surgeries and may have complications. In that case, I’m not sure if I can still say abortion is the right action, but woman should be covered for abortion if something like that comes along. Either way, I think abortion’s wrong, but the women who discover there will be very severe complications with their child or for any other major reason, abortion should be covered. For teenagers and young adults who are careless and have protected sex, abortion should NOT be covered.

However, thank you for posting a feminist article.

  7. Yet Another Josh says:

Abortion is actually only “legal” because of an overstep in the judicial branch. They are legislating from the bench. Also, it isn’t a woman’s right to kill her husband when he becomes an inconvenience. And, it shouldn’t be her right to kill her unborn, yet living inside of her, child out of convenience either. The problem isn’t, however, that abortion is quasi-legal. The problem is that women desire to commit the act, and men desire to have women commit the act of abortion.

  8. Bluebeard's Wife says:

“NOW is outraged to learn that the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed an amendment excluding abortion services from the “essential” health benefits package as defined by the government. Under this amendment, subsidies used to help pay insurance premiums for low-income people could not be used for abortion services. The New York Times reports that “insurers must use money from private sources to pay for any abortions.”"
    http://www.now.org/press/07-09/07-31.html

NOW is outraged that the government doesn’t want to pay for abortions which it does not view as “essential”. I don’t see a problem with this. Why should my tax money go to funding your abortion, if you were too irresponsible to use birth control? I would support the government subsidizing birth control to the point where it is affordable for everyone, but I don’t advocate abortion being an “essential” healthcare benefit. The government doesn’t have to pay for people’s abortions.

  9. john_von_lof says:

Why does everyone assume that women who get abortions didn’t use birth control? Sometimes It fails. Why shouldn’t our tax money go to abortion? You do realise this country pays for viagra? Even sex criminals get the stuff for free, so why should birth prevention for honest women be any different?

Men’s health-care is NOT being tampered with or restricted. This is a double standard. How is having a major part of women’s medical care excluded, not considered discrimination? It seams so UN-American!Isn’t there some constitutional item barring this sort of thing?

I’d like to see someone sue congress for compensation for being forced to grow, and birth an unwanted baby, and all of the permanent damage that causes. (Physical/ Psychological/ Emotional) How about a class action suit?

This is also discrimination against the poor. Only rich women get to decide if they want to be mothers. The rest get to watch their forced kids go hungry.

Statistically speaking, this means more women will be beaten by their spouses, and there will be a sharp rise in murder rates throughout the country.

    Abortion IS murder!

  13. Bert Weidemeier says:

It’s about time, abortion is murder, and any woman who has one should be prosecuted.

  14. Blue-Eyed Christian says:

Boo hoo, now they’ll have to pay for their baby’s death out of their own pocket.

Sorry but I’m having a hard time mustering any sympathy for women who have no medical reason to abort. The ONLY ones who should have coverage are the women whose lives are actually in peril due to their pregnancies (like an ectopic pregnancy, for example). Otherwise, if you want an abortion for reasons of convenience – and that’s what it is, if you aren’t going to die without one – then pay for it yourself.

This particular line from the letter:

“We must move quickly to contact every member of Congress during this late summer recess to make it clear that women’s lives are not for sale.”

Makes me sick. Evidently, the lives of unborn babies *are* for sale. Abortion involves more than just the woman – there’s also a child involved!

I’m Canadian, if that makes a difference.

  15. Rio Madeira says:

Canadian. If abortions must be funded by insurance companies or the government at all, it must be for health reasons; low-income women should have private charity available to them for this, and everyone else can pay for themselves.

  16. Louise C says:

I think if people want abortions they should pay for them themselves. I think it would be better to put the money into providing better contraception, so possibly even today’s women can manage to avoid getting pregnant.
